He's originally from Murray, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City. Archuleta plans to release an album in the fall of this year through 19 Recordings/Jive Records. Enjoy our interview with Archie!
DAVID ARCHULETA
The Chaparral: First of all, how psyched are you for tonight?
David Archuleta: I’m really excited. It’s fun just because this is where I started. I auditioned in
TC: Amazing. What a dream come true.
DA: Yeah!
TC: What was the fan response like last night?
DA: It was really amazing. I mean, I kind of figured what I was going to say but the audience was just screaming, and it was like, oh my gosh! It gets you so pumped and excited!
TC: What’s in the pipeline with your music coming up?
DA: With my music coming up, the album I’m working on, I just want some good pop stuff, some soulful pop. Like how Jordin Sparks had a great mix of music and just really showed her voice. [She had] some good radio songs and also some songs that were really meaningful and really expressive and emotional and had depth. I would really love to have that same combination.
TC: Who’s someone you would love to collaborate with?
DA: There are a few people. I like… [Carly Smithson in the background: “Me!”] …yeah, Carly, first of all! I bet that’d be a great duet. But I’d love to collaborate with Sarah Bareilles. She’s someone I really like. I think that would be the coolest thing! And then John Mayer, he’s someone I… oooh, John Mayer! And then I think another fun person is Natasha Bedingfield because she’s one of my favorite singers, too, and she’s actually the one who inspired me to song write, so that’s really cool. And then, who else, Jason Mraz. Jason Mraz is so… I love how it’s just so real. I’d love to do that, but I don’t think my image quite fits that yet. So I’d love to just start with the pop stuff, like how Jason Mraz’s first album was more radio friendly and then it got real and just really laid back.
TC: Have you listened to a lot of his live stuff? That stuff is inspirational.
DA: Really? Like what?
TC: A lot of his acoustic albums. Live at Java Joes, and also a bunch of—I’m a big fan, anyway.
DA: [Laughs] I am, too!
TC: So what’s something your fans would not expect or not know about you?
DA: Uhh, what they wouldn’t know, I don’t know. You know, the stuff they don’t know about me, I think there’s a reason they don’t know! Like, just keep it, not known. [Laughs] Nevermind. Let’s see, I love street hockey. Street hockey is really fun. I’m a big fan of running, it makes you feel so good and refreshed. And I like to read Billboard books and charts. And I used to rollerblade all the time.
TC: What’s something you would like to say to your fans?
DA: Aww, my fans. I just want to tell them thanks so much because I wouldn’t be here if they weren’t supporting me and had my back. Even when times got rough or things felt really overwhelming, I’d just read letters that people were saying. Them just saying thank you and how thankful they are for me to be doing what I do and I’m just like, that’s just awesome. I’m ready!
TC: There you go!
DA: Yeah!
DA: Thank you very much.
TC: I can’t wait to watch the show.
DA: Thanks so much. I gotta listen to that Jason Mraz.
