When it comes to advancement, students can come and visit the Adult Education Department at College of the Desert. Robert Chancey said, "Our department is basically helping national and international students achieve the High School Completion Program and the GED (General Education Development) exam and testing Preparation."
According to Chancey, " We administrate the GED exams, and help people, especially in this economy, find retraining online and in classes." The classes provide students with basic skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Quick Books. These skills include basic jobs such as Medical Billing, Coding, Medical Transcription, and Phar-macy Technology."
Gina Cunnigham, program specialist, helps students decide what program to take. "The GED Certifi-cate is required by most of the post-secondary institutions, and the GED tests are divided in five sections: 1) Writing,2) Social Studies, 3), Reading and 5)Math-ematics. The total time for GED test is 7 1/2 hours over a 3-day period. The minimum age to take the GED in California is 18. "We ad-vise what is best for our students"
English as Second Lan-guage (ESL)-Non Credit, is another opportunity that the Adult Education Depart-ment is offering to Inter-national students. Carol C Ryerson, who is the Interim ESL Coordinator, stated "This program emphasizes the development of very basic English skills. The classes are for beginning to advanced English language learners. The advance students transition into credit classes (Credit ESL) and Certificate program.
The program serves slightly more than 2000 students per semester, and there is no tuition cost. We also provide a Child Care Center for students that stay in classes for a minimum of four to five hours. There are also free bus passes supplied by the alumni association."
Blanca Montenegro, Senior Program specialist, said: "These wonderful programs help students continue their education and improve their work or job related skills."
