Buy Nothing Day:Flipping the Bird at Black Friday
Aaron White
Issue date: 11/23/09 Section: News
We live in a society consumed by consumer goods, a fact not lost on an increasing amount of Americans. If you are looking for something to do, the day after thanksgiving, try braving it out with the family another day, playing outside, or going for a walk.
Black Friday is the day that gets most businesses out of the red (debt) and into the black (profits). A day characterized by long lines, busy parking lots and mindless consumption.
However, this year could be different if people stop shopping, and follow the simplicity that is Buy Nothing Day.
Buy Nothing Day is a critique of our society; you can participate by simply not buying anything. Some people take Buy Nothing Day further, using it as a platform to pull off pranks that draw attention to some of our Economic problems. One action carried out in the past was, the zombie walk, in which people dress like zombies and walk through the mall, distributing leaflets on the problems with our economy. Other actions have been putting up stickers and posters displaying the absurdity of our current system, cutting up credit cards and offering to do so as a voluntary service in malls.
Buy Nothing Day points out the problems with pum-ping liquidity into the economic system whenever we are broke. This is not an economic lecture, but rather confronting the public with something they care about but have no knowledge of-- money. The current state of our economy should be the best example: consume less.
