On November 17, 2009, the gang from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia will release a Christmas special on DVD and Blu-ray called A Very Sunny Christmas.
Starring Kaitlin Olson (Dee), Charlie Day (Charlie), Rob McElhenney (Mac), Glenn Howerton (Dennis), and Danny DeVito (Frank), the Sunny cast celebrates the holidays in a one hour unrated DVD.
According to one of the writers/actors/producers, Glenn Howerton, the Philadelphia delinquents each rediscover the joys of Christmas and what the holidays mean to them. He says they were given the opportunity to be more outrageous and over the top since it is not showing on cable.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been on FX since 2005, but it is still not a largely popular program. The show has created almost a cult following fan base.
A first glance at this show might turn people off. With show titles like "Who Pooped the Bed?", "The Gang Gets Racist", and "The Gang Exploits a Miracle", people can immediately tell there is some inappropriate and potentially offensive material in it. After watching the show with an open mind, it is obvious the writing is clever and meant to cause side-splitting laughter while poking fun at society.
The show has been called "Seinfeld on crack" and according to Amazon.com, this Christmas special will live up to it's reputation. When you combine alcohol, selfish and shameless human beings, and holiday adventures, it is a mixture for hilarious disaster.
Reoccurring characters such as the McPoyles, The Waitress, Rickety Cricket, and the very popular Green Man are said to appear in the Christmas special.
This is not the first time It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia has expanded from their weekly series. This past September the cast kicked off "The Nightman Cometh" tour from one of the most popular episodes in season four. It is a musical written by the character Charlie who hopes to impress his love, The Waitress.
Ever since Danny DeVito joined the cast as Dennis and Dee's father in 2006, the show has gone nowhere but up. The musical and Christmas special are just the beginning. More and more people are recognizing the genius of this show and the best is yet to come for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Season five premiered September 17, 2009 on FX. You can catch it on FX Thursdays at 10 o'clock pm. Seasons 1-4 are available on DVD for all those who need to catch up.
