A new Waitlist procedure will be in place for Spring registration beginning December 3rd when Priority 1 Registration starts. For the first time in College of the Desert's history, waitlisting will be an option for students trying to enroll in closed classes. Although waitlisting is new to COD, it is currently used at over thirty-five Community Colleges in California, according to John Loera, Dean of Enrollment Services at College of the Desert.
When registering for a class section, if there are no seats available, the student will be asked if he/she wants to be "waitlisted". If the answer is yes, and there are spaces of the waitlist, the student's name will be added. However, students must meet all prerequisites for the course in order to qualify for waitlisting. Stu-dents will not be able to enroll in another section of the same course if they are already waitlisted for that course.
As an opening occurs, students on the waitlist will receive an email message to inform them they have a seat in the class, see Web Advisor "Manage Waitlist". Students must pay course fees within the five day limit, or be dropped for non-payment.
Registration will close at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 29, 2010. This closure will allow the waitlist to be updated before classes that begin Monday, February 1st
at 7:00 a.m. If a student is on a waitlist for a closed section then "You are not enrolled in the class. You must attend the first day of class and be on time". Dean Loera emphasized.
If there are no-shows, the instructor may add students from the waitlist. The waitlisted students that are present will be given an Add Permit Code in the order they appear on the waitlist. Add Permit Codes cannot be used through the Tel-ephone Registration Sys-tem. Add Permit Codes are only valid February 1-8 via Web Advisor. Add Permit Codes can only be used one time.
Students with Add Permit Codes can use any computer with internet access to log on to Web Advisor and add the course. There will be no need to stand in long lines at the Admissions and Records office to enroll. In addition, there will be no signed override forms to present at the Admissions and Records office. Waitlisted students in closed Online sections will be emailed an Add Permit Code by the instructor.
Dean Loera is hopeful that this new system will eliminate long lines during the first week of the semester. He encouraged all students to sign up for the new COD email system - MyCOD.US, or have a current email address on file to ensure prompt notification of waitlist status. Notification will only be by email, no letters will be sent.
Loera also emphasized that the waitlist only affects full, closed class sections.
Opened sections will be available for enrollment the same way as previous years. For more information, check the COD website www.collegeofthedesert.edu

It is convenient that students on the waitlist will receive an email message to inform them they have a seat in the class.
