Campus clubs and honor students at College of the Desert are collecting food donations to help the homeless just in time for the holidays. The clubs involved include: ASCOD, ACES, and MESA. They have teamed up with Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society, to launch their Homeless Awareness project."We're focusing on helping individuals in our community," says Deborah Morgan, the team leader of Phi Theta Kappa. "I think we should give back to our community, especially in these very hard economic times."
Members of the Beta Rho- Iota chapter of Phi Theta Kappa kicked off the project October 23rd by building and spending the night in a Homeless Village on campus made out of cardboard and tents. The following day, representatives from Salvation Army, Shelter from the Storm, The Path, Community Action Program, Operation Safe House, Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, and Martha's Village came and spoke to those involved.
"If you can't hand [a homeless person] a burger at a restaurant because of the stereotype that people on the street get, then this is a great way to get involved," Morgan comments. "That box of cereal or that can of food will be very appreciated by someone who doesn't have anything."
The food drive was between November 2nd-19th, and all donations were delivered on November 20th. Boxes where students could place their donations were placed in the following locations: The campus outside of the Student Life office located in the HILB, the lobby of the McCarthy Child De-velopment Center, and the lobby of the Barker Nursing Complex. All proceeds were donated to Coachella Valley Rescue Mission who feed 500 people daily. "It's a nice thing to during the holidays," says COD student, Hayle Essman. "I'll be glad to donate." "It's a good idea." says Adrian Barbuzza, another COD student.
Although the food drive is over, if you would still like to get involved, Coachella Valley Rescue Mission is still accepting donations. "Christmas is coming," says Linda Garland from Coachella Valley Rescue Mission. "We have 8 tur-keys, and we need 800. If you buy an extra box of turkey dressing or an extra bar of butter this year, please donate it. If everyone donates a little, then we'll have more than enough." Coachella Valley Rescue Mission is located at 47-518 Van Buren in Indio. Their number is (760)-347-3512. Linda Garland's extension is 221.
