The COD women's basketball program has changed drastically since last year. With a new coaching staff headed up by Barbara Grainge, the girl's team is looking competitive and ready to play hard. With a few games under their belt, and still no victories to show for their hard work, coach Grainge bel-ieves the change the girls need to make in order to win is by competing in the moment and no to dwell on mistakes. It is important to be confident.
Wednesday, November 18th, the Women's team took on the Cerro Coso Coyotes. The girls came out strong, and although they played their hearts out they walked away with a 6-point loss. Grainge commented that the girls need to learn to play within her coaching system and strive for perfection within that system if they expect to win, and her key to success is to ensure self-discipline in work ethic by working on the fundamentals of the game, working out in the weight room, conditioning, and working on their shots.
"As a team we need to stay focused, whether we are winning or losing." said Isabel Gonzalez, captain of the women's basketball team at COD. "Playing and losing to Mt. Sac (Mt. San Antonio) and Compton was a wake up call for all of us. As captain I'm going to do my part and be aggressive in the key and finish my shots."
Even though they have not won a game yet, the women's team is turning heads and getting attention. After their game on Wed-nesday, the Cerro Coso head coach stated he is nervous to play COD in the future. Every day the women's team is getting better, and coach Grainge is excited to see her team growing and preparing to be successful. She enjoys seeing the girls encourage one another and thinks the team has done a particularly good job at accepting each others strengths and helping one-another with their weaknesses. The girls are be-coming more responsible for their choices as students and athletes, and a turn-around in the momentum of the season so far is definitely on the horizon.
