The New Face of Late-Night is Tall, Dark, & Chicano: George Lopez

George Lopez, comedian and actor, made his groundbreaking late-night television debut on November 16th with his racy new show, "Lopez Tonight'' (TBS, 11 p.m. Monday thru Thursday.)
Lopez, a Mexican American, is ''the first Latino late-night talk-show host'' in recent history.
As Lopez runs onstage to the song ''Low Rider'' sung by War (an American funk band from California), the large, ethnically diverse audience goes wild. '' When you get this much color in a room,'' he says to his studio audience, ''It almost looks like a ''sting'' operation, where they tell you you're going to trade in your guns for liquor tickets. Then 'boom,' you're arrested for child support.''
Most of Lopez's jokes brilliantly explore conflict and integration between Mexican and standard American culture, while poking fun at ethnic stereotyping. However, no ethnic, racial, or religious group is excluded from the Grammy Award winning comedian's stand-up routine.
The show is completely edgy, showing that Lopez is not afraid to look race related issues directly in the face. For example, a regularly occurring skit, titled ''Creepy Little White Girl''. The skit involves a young woman holding a headless doll while standing in a window. Dry-ice vapors eerily caress her face and long, blonde pigtails. The audience plays along, when Lopez reacts with fear as the girl proceeds to give George the bad news about Glenn Beck's appendicitis, and Jon Gosselin's new rabbi.
''Lopez Tonight'' has a strong showing in the ratings, with guests, such as Andy Garcia, Shakira, Queen Latifa, and Larry David.
Although it may have a similar format as all the other late-night shows on offer, what makes this show particularly refreshing is that it feels as though everyone gets a chance to be represented. Felicidades!
